For the audience, it appeared to be a match made in heaven Her extensions are high and her leaps buoyant, and it all appears pretty effortless Y The sighs were plainly audible after the first pas de deux, a slow dance of forbidden love On the bill was "La Bayadere," a three-act story ballet set in royal India, the kind of lavishly costumed spectacle for which American Ballet Theatre is best known "La Bayadere," which debuted in 1877 with choreography by Marius Petipa and has been updated by Natalia Makarova, has one of those soap-opera plots that's a little hard to follow Her quicksilver turns on point drew a few gasps from the audience Barring injuries, she surely has a huge career ahead of her Naturally, they will not be left alone to enjoy their love Corella, too, had spectators cheering his leaps Cojocaru was born in Bucharest and trained in Kiev, in the Ukraine, before joining the Royal Ballet and quickly making her way from the corps to soloist to principal The famous second act of "Bayadere" â€â€? all dancing and no plot â€â€? actually takes place inside Solor's opium-clouded head Dancer Cojocaru Makes N But it was a new dancer the crowd had come to see: Alina Cojocaru, 21 and all of 5 feet and 2 inches, a dancer so delicately shaped and light-footed that she can make other ballerinas look positively clunky She joyfully dances with it, but it contains a poisonous snake â€â€? actually a gift from the vengeful Gamzatti â€â€? and Nikiya is fatally bitten Much anguish ensues She refuses the antidote; she'd rather die than see her lover wed another At the end of the first act, Nikiya, forced to dance at the betrothal ceremony of Solor and Gamzatti, is presented with a fruit basket that she mistakenly believes to be from her lover Accompanied by the corps de ballet, which opened the act with a long and dramatic series of arabesques in lovely unison, Cojocaru, in classic white tutu, really had a chance to shine The Romanian-born dancer has had a meteoric rise at London's Royal Ballet, where she is a principal At 21, she has already been compared to a young Margot Fonteyn and even Anna Pavlova Dreading his upcoming nuptials to Gamzatti, he dreams of being reunited with Nikiya in the Kingdom of the Shades Luckily, Nikiya's death doesn't end her role; she simply dons another costume and dances from the afterlife Nikiya is also loved by the High Brahmin, and Solor has been chosen to marry the rajah's daughter, Gamzatti But she has stunning control of her small frame, which is as powerful and as pliant as it is delicate Cojocaru is tiny, and her chiseled face resembles that of a porcelain doll But she had never set foot in New York until she arrived last week for her two performances of "La Bayadere," partnered by Angel Corella, one of ABT's best-loved and most exciting male dancers And the best dancing was yet to come Debut With ABT May 13, 5:04 PM EST There was the unmistakable whiff of stardom in the air the other night at the Metropolitan Opera House It tells of a temple dancer (bayadere), Nikiya, who is in love with a noble warrior, Solor |
