See this article at: http://entertainment.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=143873 Clay Aiken Named 'Best-Mannered' Person Dec 18, 8:09 AM EST Clay Aiken, a runner-up on the Fox network's talent contest "American Idol," heads the National League of Junior Cotillions' list of the "Ten Best-Mannered People of 2003." The Charlotte-based organization, an etiquette and social training program for young people, announced its 12th annual list Tuesday. Nominations came from cotillion students and directors nationwide. Anne Colvin Winters, executive director of the league, said selections were based on "demonstration of honor, dignity and respect." Aiken, 25, was selected "because of the courteous manner in which he treats fellow performers and fans." His album, "Measure of a Man," was released in October. The list also includes talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, Gen. Tommy Franks, Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons, surfer Bethany Hamilton, NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw, first lady Laura Bush, actor Mel Gibson, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. ——— On the Net: http://www.nljc.com http://www.clayaiken.com/ http://www.idolonfox.com/ See this article at: http://entertainment.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=130444 Brightman's Album 'Harem" Hard to Pin Down Aug 6, 10:16 AM EST Sarah Brightman walked into the room, looking very hippy, with bracelets around her ankles, rings on most of her fingers and what seemed to be hair extensions flowing down her back. She had just arrived in town to promote her latest recording, "Harem," a mix of pop music, classical themes and Middle Eastern textures, part of an appearance tour that has taken her through Europe, Brazil, Japan, Lebanon and South Africa since late May. It's an odd work, one that doesn't really fit into any category. Even she can't put a peg on it. "The singing is more about creating an atmosphere than singing a song," she said. "This is more layered. It's a fairly organic thing, because I've worked in so many styles. It must be hell to market. It's certainly a very individual thing of mine." At one moment, it sounds a lot like Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The next, it picks up melodies from Puccini's "Un bel di (One fine day)" and Borodin's Polovtsian Dances, veering off into "What a Wonderful World." At times, it seems like an attempt for mystical mood music that almost recedes into the background, At others, it sounds like a try for dance tunes that conjure up images of sandstorms — the title track already has been remixed and is on the dance charts. "I got into reading a lot of Persian poetry, Middle Eastern poetry, Indian poetry," she said. "Some of it is really, really beautiful." And how does "What a Wonderful World" fit in? "I've always wanted to do it — my favorite being, obviously, the Louis Armstrong version," she said. Some of it sounds shmaltzy, like Andrea Bocelli's pop tunes, but her soprano is far better than his thin tenor. Her voice has the power and focus to sing classical music, but she's not interested in becoming a Violetta or Tosca. It's difficult to discern what's ahead for Brightman, who turned 42 on Aug. 5. She's not interested in returning to the stage, where she became known to many for her performance as Christine in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" in London in 1986 and in New York two years later. That seems like a lifetime ago. Since then, she's concentrated on recordings such as "Time to Say Goodbye" and "La Luna." "I've actually enjoyed the last 10 years of working on all the recordings," she said. "I hear ideas going around in my head all the time for recordings, projects." She does have some interest in writing music, but it sounds more like a far-off wish than anything coming up soon. "I think I would start writing a classical piece," she said. "I'm not really sure what it would be. I'd want to go back to school and learn orchestration." The oldest of six children, Brightman has been singing since she was a toddler. She had her first hit, the disco tune "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper," when she was 17. She married German rock band manager Andrew Graham-Stewart in 1979, got divorced four years later, then married Lloyd Webber. The had met in 1981 when he cast her in "Cats." They divorced in 1985 divorced during her Broadway run in his "Aspects of Love." Brightman couldn't project then the life she would go on to lead, the sounds that would pop into her head. She thinks part of her style comes from the constant travel, that she's never at her home in Germany too long. Her next concert tour starts in January, but the sites haven't been set. "You have a lot of space when you're traveling," she said. "I travel a lot by myself. That way I just get to listen to things, read things. You're mind is challenged. You're more on top of things than if you stay in one place." ——— On the Net: http://www.sarah-brightman.com |
