Doug Skinner, Michael O'Connor and Nancy Harrington â€â€? created a classic bit of tomfoolery called "The Regard of Flight His admiration stretches back to commedia dell'arte, to vaudeville and to the great comics of the silent screen such as Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin Irwin's wide-eyed stage persona celebrates the comically frazzled " Together, the two acts make up "The Regard Evening," the second offering in the Signature Theatre Company's season-long salute to this blissfully funny clown The man is an excellent ventriloquist, too, bantering with a primly dressed dummy named Eddie whose persona mirrors Skinner's own After all this time, that piece remains as airborne as ever "The Regard of Flight" gently mocks theatrical conventions â€â€? with Skinner, who also is Irwin's masterful musical accompanist, explaining them in the driest, most deadpan manner possible " The brief act â€â€? almost a short sketch â€â€? is a pale extension of what has gone before The clown doesn't even have a Web site Review: 'Regard Evening' Draws on Antics Dec 15, 9:42 PM EST The sweet-tempered antics of Bill Irwin are ageless Here, he's an Everyman trying to get a good night's sleep when, all of a sudden, he is thrust into a hilarious dissertation on theater Also scampering around the stage is O'Connor, portraying a relentless, owl-eyed critic who takes great delight in challenging and chasing the beleaguered Irwin But then, "The Regard of Flight" is a hard act to follow Irwin has a deep affection for the clowns and comedy of yore, a love that he demonstrated in his previous Signature work, "The Harlequin Studies," which played at the Signature earlier in the season In a light, pleasing voice, he sings two hokey, early 20th-century tunes â€â€? "Home in Pasadena" and "A Long Way From Home" â€â€? that goofily pay homage to homesickness Yet he is also adept at verbal interplay, particularly his spoofing of an actor struggling to perform Shakespeare in the most arty manner possible " Now Irwin, with an assist from Skinner and O'Connor, has brought it back, along with a less successful, after-intermission update entitled "In the Same Regard |
