Not so at City Center, where "Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert" has revived "Can-Can" with Patti LuPone in Lilo's role as La Mome Pistache, the pleasure-loving owner of the Bal du Paradis They were the two numbers that helped rocket Verdon to stardom five decades ago LuPone is one of those larger-than-life performers, at her extravagant best in such extravagant shows as "Evita" and "Sunset Boulevard Subtle it's not, but then neither is personality-plus LuPone He's in love with LuPone's character, but nevertheless acknowledges the charms of the other woman while singing "It's All Right With Me With the swagger of a Neapolitan stevedore, LuPone doesn't just walk across the wide City Center stage She owns it Fifty-one years ago, it was a supporting player, Gwen Verdon, who danced off with all the reviews, leaving the star, French chanteuse Lilo, to probably wonder if anyone saw her in the show Even Eli Wallach, in a non-singing role as a senior judge, gets into the festive spirit of things â€â€? and at age 88, he cannily snares his share of laughs â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
