Working from a script by Anders Thomas Jensen, director Susanne Bier has found the best way â€â€? or as good a way as any â€â€? to tell a strikingly well thought-out story Real people do it all the time "Open Hearts," a NewMarket Films release, is rated R for language and sexuality After the car accident, no event feels like it's imposed upon the narrative, as if Bier just sat back and observed what happens next But by the end, Bier has explored the human condition in a truthful way R â€â€? Restricted â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences Mikkelsen chews on the delicious strangeness of Niels' predicament: He'd never looked for an affair, but his wife's actions allow him to fall into one Running time: 113 min NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted "Open Hearts" doesn't overtly ask any big questions, and certainly doesn't provide any answers (Kaas, his power contained entirely in his voice or his silence, delivers a brilliant, unsentimental performance Joachim isn't dead, and Niels isn't his doctor All ages admitted As Cecilie, for whom the sugary romanticism of the pop songs she listens to has never been challenged, Richter radiates empathy but has nowhere to put it Three and a half stars out of four He asks about Cecilie: "Does she still phone every day?" The actors are all note-perfect ) Cecilie doesn't give up, but with every new rejection from Joachim, each one crueler than the last, she relies more and more on Niels Inevitably and with utter believability, they fall into each other's arms Kaas makes every scene count as Joachim, as does Paprika Steen (also terrific in "The Celebration") as Niels' wrung-out wife Cecilie has been waiting at the hospital for news about Joachim when Niels walks up to her in his white uniform and says he needs to tell her something Their relationship is vivid and spontaneous, their fabulous chemistry established in two brisk scenes She begins with Cecilie (Sonja Richter), a pretty, stylish 25-year-old who cooks at a fancy restaurant, accepting the clumsy marriage proposal of her scruffily handsome boyfriend, Joachim (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) 'Open Hearts' Is Warm, Yet Incisive Drama Feb 28, 11:31 AM EST The Dogma 95 manifesto, a brash and slightly tongue-in-cheek cinematic "vow of chastity" signed by four Danish directors in 1995, has resulted in a few searing films, but now it has produced a lovely one A walk on the grounds outside the hospital progresses to phone calls to a late-night request that he visit her apartment Well aware of what the diagnosis means for him physically but unable to confront it emotionally, he asks Cecilie to stop seeing him With the encouragement of his guilt-stricken wife, Niels becomes a sounding board for the young woman, who has no family PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested Joachim's spine has been shattered, leaving him a quadriplegic PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 Everyone's flawed, yet "Open Hearts" resonates as a portrait of resiliency, of people responding better to catastrophe than you'd expect â€â€? at least in a movie Though the shooting style and the performances make the movie feel loose and spontaneous, Bier is great at structure; she keeps everything in perfect equilibrium This is Bier's seventh feature; she's come to Dogma at the right time, bringing maturity and a sure hand Ultimately, this emotionally penetrating film is about how life confronts us with circumstances we never would have considered â€â€? all we can do is react, and move on A woman in her late 30s and her teenage daughter get out of the car; soon we learn they are the wife and daughter of Niels (Mads Mikkelsen), a physician She responds: "Is he dead?"
