a coproduction with The Royal Opera, Covent Garden â€â€? was imposing and impressive, closer to Hal Prince's original production than the more intimate 1989 revival at New York's Circle in the Square She allows Athanael to take her to a convent, where she dies within weeks, praising god Neil Armfield's stage direction was fluid and crisp Athanael devotes himself to turning Thais from pleasures of the flesh to devotion to god, and he succeeds in a time period so swift that, even for opera, is unbelievable Tenor Donald Kaasch gave a nice, flamboyant portrayal of Nicias, the old friend of Athanael who had purchased Thais for a week This run of 12 performances, which ended Sunday, was Terfel's first in the role, one he should take all over the world While the notes were all there, she rarely sparkled, falling short of Terfel's intensity Thais requires notes to high D, and Fleming's gorgeous creamy soprano was ideal â€â€? although she did let a couple of notes get astray Celena Shafer, his Johanna, was more plaintive, coming off more confused than angelic Lovett, the piemaker who cooks up the scheme to become Sweeney's partner The desert in John Cox's production, with sets and costumes by Paul Brown, resembled slightly the desert in Brown's "Moses und Aron" set for Graham Vick's production at the Metropolitan Opera three years ago He originally was to have sung Sweeney 2 1/2 years ago in concert performances with the New York Philharmonic and Patti LuPone, but back surgery caused him to cancel, and George Hearn replaced him The restoration of "Johanna (Judge's Song)," cut from the original production, made his character even scarier, and Tess Schofield's costume gave him a ghostlike appearance Terfel so totally inhabited the character that it surpassed even his famous portrayals of Mozart's Figaro and Don Giovanni, and Verdi's Falstaff Many fine actors have portrayed Sweeney, including Len Cariou in the original Broadway production in 1979, but Terfel combined his tremendous voice with extraordinary acting to create the raw emotion of the man, a villain as vicious as any in opera Her wicked witch laugh cracked up the house Fleming and Hampson made a compelling case for the opera â€â€? but only if it is strongly cast It would be a loss if his portrayal were not recorded for posterity Unfortunately, amplification made some parts of the stage louder than others org The house of Thais, with gold trim, was somewhat dated, and some of the costumes were odd Conductor Andrew Davis drew out color and beauty from the score Mezzo-soprano Judith Christin sang Mrs Timothy Nolen, who in the past has sung Sweeney to acclaim, was haunting as Judge Turpin, the man who sent Sweeney away for 15 years so he could seduce his wife and steal his child Paul Gemignani, who conducted the world premiere performances, gave a knowing account of a score enhanced by a full opera orchestra â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
