Liza Minnelli is getting ready for a legal fight against VH1 The network does say through it all, Minnelli was terrific A VH1 spokeswoman said they weren't "given the cooperation" they needed to make the show happen She and David Gest have hired a lawyer, the same guy who represented Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel in his losing murder trial " And, he says "the case is not necessarily about money, it's about fairness After all the rich, furry styles appeared, a startling all-satin outfit in sunset colors hit the runway Except for a few puffy tulle overskirts, the look was slim to almost invisible Gaultier was presumably inspired by the Three Musketeers, but Scottish kilts and capes looked handsome, recalling the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie The Italians Grimaldi Giardina (first names, Sylvio and Antonio) had a fine small show in a branch of the Beaux Arts School They were worn with slim pants or even miniskirts, wrapped in their furry cape cocoons Gaultier Unveils Swashbuckling Styles Jul 8, 6:49 PM EST Jean-Paul Gaultier, always the maverick, concentrated his fall haute couture show on swashbuckling looks: boots, capes and even the occasional sword It's been a few years since there was such raving on a fashion program But this new Italian house offers charm for younger dressers rather than in-your-face glitz As today's youngsters try to make a hit in Paris, there are novelties and hopes for a bright future Leather was used sparingly but beautifully The music was spaghetti-Western style, and one almost expected a bow from Clint Eastwood in the first numbers, with their pheasant-feathered cowboy hats All were handsome and rich-looking Timid dressers won't go for Gaultier's dashing, daring styles Whether in python, felt, velvet or fur, they looked fantastic In the program, they used odd quasi-religious terms to describe their collection: "Sin born from the ground crept into the vegetable kingdom, the vegetation takes possession of the human body," and so on Gaultier also put out a couple of busty and jet-beaded dresses But that was grubby style, far from haute luxe as shown by Gaultier Clothes looked especially charming in Empire-style, high-waisted dresses, or with cutouts over blue silk underfacing Pants, blouse, boots and wrap all came out together in hot red, purple, turquoise and pink, adding up to a trouser outfit with an incongruously colorful cowboy look There were some lovely patchwork effects in softly pastel dresses, combining fabrics like velvet, crepe de chine and tulle or chiffon Then came the sexy stuff, which Gaultier would never leave out of a collection Another evening dress that drew applause was a shocking pink satin, curvaceously fitted and draped, showing a leg and trimmed in Saga mink Evening wear was softened by several long dresses in smoky blue and other pastel chiffons, casually draped or ruffled Eastwood starred in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" back in 1967 wearing capes and cowboy hats After all, Gaultier's main backer is the house of Hermes, whose boss, Jean-Louis Dumas, was watching in the front row It can't compare for opulence with Dior's out-of-sight costumes or the extravagance at Valentino As the shows ended Thursday, he offered a contrast from the sexy glitz seen at other houses But he did offer some sparkle and feminine evening wear following the Puss-in-Boots characters that led off the program Showy thigh boots were de rigueur with these styles â€â€? some with fur edging on the fastenings The slithery and slim gowns were very fetching when made in leafy wrapped patterns, or in feathery and fringed looks or slinky gowns that sometimes shone with crystal trim at the bust Everything costs money in these elaborate looks, but Grimaldi Giardini might be a name to watch for less expensive and original evening wear Here the long coats or capes were in shiny calf of autumnal colors like ruddy or copper leaf Gaultier began over 25 years ago as a ready-to-wear upstart, showing in louche parts of town and featuring outlandish looks from Eskimos in drag to housemaids He made it right to the top, with talent and perseverance But the focal point was the capes Overall, there was a view of new talent here Furs from fox to mink came out for the capes in blue-grays or browns There was a good mini in gold sequins, worn with thigh boots and a super-luxurious brown mink coat Gaultier is a favorite of many fashion and film stars, and applauding in the front row were Catherine Deneuve, Ivana Trump and Val Kilmer But the collection did feature some appliqué wispy leaves that conjured up the Garden of Eden |
