This is still poetry and there are so many people who have a predetermined attitude toward what poetry is," he says " The nine poets, who are all in their 20s and 30s, recite their own works, in both solos and groups, some in the rich rhythms made popular by rap and hip-hop "I picked poets that moved me personally, that I felt a certain kind of spiritual and intellectual connection with," says Stan Lathan, who put the show together and directed the original HBO television series "You have As head of Def Jam Recordings, he helped bring hip-hop to the mainstream, and did the same for comedians with the "Def Comedy Jam" shows little vignettes that are very much about the American experience from a group of American writers who are very serious about who they are, where they come from Lathan says the show will run at least through June, and plans are underway to take it on the road Simmons, on the other hand, knew spoken word's time had come Tendaji Lathan stands behind his turntables at the side of the stage, offering musical introductions in styles from hip-hop to soul Before rehearsals started, "I was thinking the world wasn't ready for it," says Poetri, 28, who goes by one name and who is one of nine performers in "Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway com "I think this show has a way of making people think of themselves differently At times, they are accompanied by resident disc jockey Tendaji Lathan, Stan's son In this show, Sia, manic on stage in his pink sweater but quiet and reflective off stage, says, "What you learn is how much you need them The themes are both lighthearted and serious defpoetryjamnyc Many of the poets in the Broadway show have spent years on the slam circuit, to great success Among the disbelievers were some of the poets in the show â€â€? and Lathan himself "I believe it's very special to walk into a theater performance that not only entertains but makes you think, makes you question the way you feel about your lover, or your government or you job," he says Standing on a stage lightly dressed with colored panels and raised platforms, the poets take their turns performing, prowling over the floor and reciting the same poems each night from their own personal repertoires as well as some written specifically for this production "Def Poetry Jam" audiences are exposed to performances that would seem more common to club and coffee house open-mike nights for amateur poets than a stage production in a Broadway theater that's nurtured such powerful dramas as "Children of a Lesser God," such comedies as "A Thousand Clowns" and such sturdy musicals as "Ain't Misbehavin' " But Lathan acknowledges that he, too, had his doubts about the viability of the production "It was ready to go Georgia Me ponders the life of a full-figured woman while Mayda Del Valle and Lemon honor the late Latin jazzman Tito Puente But even for them, taking the performance to Broadway has been a change, most notably away from the competitive atmosphere of slams to working as an ensemble " "You can work together as a team and create the same feeling that you get from slams," he says " But the show opened in November at the Longacre Theatre to critical acclaim and enthusiastic crowds, and has won such a following that producers are planning a touring production " Watching the poets come together "was so interesting, because they really did have to start thinking differently about their work and their relationship to other poets," Stan Lathan says "We've demonstrated that you don't necessarily need competition to create a high-energy, spirited performance," says Steve Colman, 32, a poet who tells audiences, "There's a terrorist threat in the land and it's not just the boy bands '" Not here In competitions, says 26-year-old Beau Sia, there's "a lot of ego, a lot of, 'I'm going to smash them and show them who's the star " â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
