Art Garfunkel freely admits that Paul Simon was the one with the words during their long musical partnership "< /p> Songwriter Buddy Mondlock and performer Maia Sharp collaborated with Garfunkel, helping to turn some of his poetry into songs " "We have an image of ourselves, and we carry ourselves all through life with some rough sense of ourselves," Garfunkel told the Daily News of Los Angeles " Their mourning wasn't made any easier, the women say, by their record label, Arista Records, which decided shortly after Lopes' death that the unfinished disc would be turned into a greatest hits collection "Tionne didn't want to be around when any of the raps were going on," says Dallas Austin, one of the group's longtime producers and collaborators ' That's kind of how we kept going, and praying the whole time They might not have come together at all if not for Thomas' urging; Watkins was home with a new baby, and Lopes and Thomas were working on solo projects "The world will not ever forget Left Eye " Thomas says Lopes was in good spirits while working on the disc TLC's two surviving members say they weren't consulted We're supposed to be doing a TLC record still," she says "And there are days when you're like, I'm not even fighting it today, I just have to let it out, and you just cry "We don't really know "We made sure all the songs were fun-spirited, because she was a fun girl The video for the first single, "Girl Talk," features a mini-tribute to her; others will follow, they say " Thomas says she and Watkins never doubted they would finish the album, and never considered hiring a replacement for Lopes "As sad as the process was, it was still a creative one," Austin says " Most of Lopes' raps on the disc were crafted by her for other songs; producers sifted through material she had recorded for her solo disc, which was released overseas, and other archive material I think it was just a financial decision They refused to be in the studio, however, when Lopes' voice was played 12) "We felt like it was a big slap in the face for the simple fact that we were in the middle of our project," says Thomas Because it's so hard Instead, "3D" is fun, sexy and danceable â€â€? typical TLC, and just the type of album Lopes would have wanted, says Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, one of the group's two surviving members, with Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins It's a very emotional point in time in our lives That would be "real crazy," they say, considering the energy and vitality that Lopes brought to their stage act Yet despite the "Behind the Music"-type turmoil, they remained together, Thomas and Watkins are quick to point out "We were always fun, exciting, experimental â€â€? a very spontaneous type of group "We made her act silly again, because I felt that she was probably a little too serious "We're the only ones who can keep it alive," Watkins interjects It's the fourth album from the chart-topping, Grammy-winning, headline-grabbing group â€â€? and quite possibly their last They hope "3D" will serve as a celebration of Lopes' life "It would almost be disrepectful," Watkins says of a Lopes-less TLC tour "She had just passed away And Lisa was that to the 10th power," says Thomas, 31 And she had public spats with the other two members "Everything happens for a reason, because had we not gone into the studio, and she had stayed on her solo project and I had done mine, we wouldn't even have a TLC record right now "But to keep yourself going, you'll kind of be in denial and say, 'She's in Honduras or working on another project While angry about pressure to resume the project quickly, they also say it gave them something to help take their minds off the tragedy She felt her friend had gained more serenity in recent years But on other days, Thomas and Watkins say, it's harder It was very insensitive and I don't think that they were very compassionate about it at all "It didn't feel right yet That was clear earlier this summer, when the pair broke down at the MTV Video Music Awards while announcing a scholarship in Lopes' honor It was crazy "Right now, we're just handling one thing at a time "We're going to make sure that y'all don't forget her," laughs Thomas Watkins and Thomas got the chance to finish the album after protesting to the label â€â€? and agreeing to get back to work soon after Lopes' funeral "There are days when it's hard to keep it together," Thomas says We don't really want to put it out there like that," says Thomas People always wanted to say that we were going to break up, but did we ever?" says Watkins, 32 " During the interview in Atlanta, where the group started and is based, memories of Lopes bring laughter â€â€?
