Springer is played by Michael Brandon with just the right note of vaguely creepy diffidence (and a Springerlike mane of silver hair) There's the tubby Dwight (Benjamin Lake, a newcomer with a noble tenor voice), who has been cheating on his wife and mistress with a "chick with a No wonder the real Jerry Springer reportedly loved the show when he saw it at the Edinburgh Festival last August And even at its wildest and most weird (which is much of the time), "Jerry Springer" rarely loses sight of the grand, unquenchable passions that propel what might otherwise have been a freak show The secrets spill forth in "Jerry Springer â€â€? The Opera," the Royal National Theater's first major production under its new artistic director, Nicholas Hytner But that much is evident from the bravura of Thomas' score, which wittily embraces Bach one minute and Burt Bacharach the next, not to mention the very form of a show that has found an elevated cultural context, namely opera, for its outsized emotions " â€â€? well, you can imagine; Shawntel (Alison Jiear) dreams of being a pole dancer, which means triumphing over her obesity and a grimly abusive husband If the show has an antecedent, it's in the tradition of Stephen Sondheim's equally astringent and uncompromising "Assassins," which also explored the American public's often psychotic thirst for attention and love From the discards of American society, "Jerry Springer â€â€? The Opera" has added new life to a musical genre in ways no one before has dared "Oh, how my heart aches for love," comes as a genuine lament from society's dispossessed in Act 2 And when the action shifts in the second act to hell, the same actor reappears as Jesus in a cosmic trial that, we are warned, may contain "epic themes and mock-heroic language If you could fault the show with anything, it would be for an 11th-hour outbreak of piety ("hopefully, what survives of us is love"), as if the creators were keen to make clear the seriousness of their intentions Then there's Montel (Wills Morgan), who feels most complete in diapers As director Lee's production moves dizzyingly on, you come to realize this really is the stuff of opera, even if Handel's recitatives didn't rely on countless variations on a single expletive Details of "Jerry Springer" just don't fit in a family newspaper Where you might expect a rather smug English satire at the expense of screaming American lowlife, "Jerry Springer" manages to be over-the-top and foul-mouthed â€â€? and also witty and wise The production, which opened Tuesday, makes one of America's trashiest TV shows into something resembling high art Suffice it to say that the libretto from Lee and Thomas doesn't ignore the disturbances that have been the Springer talk show's stock-in-trade: guests appearing nude or nearly so; incest, adultery, on-stage violence, offensive language and situations " An embryonic version of the Richard Thomas-Stewart Lee creation first appeared at a workshop more than two years ago 'Springer' Opera Rejuvenates London Stage Apr 30, 12:51 PM EST "All my guests have guilty secrets," sings an onstage Jerry Springer I'd love to be swept off my feet," Kidman tells Lesley Stahl in a "60 Minutes" profile to air Sunday on CBS That would be lovely," the 35-year-old actress said ' Please That would be fun "I spent a decade of my life with him and loved him "I mean, when you spend your that amount of time with someone, they are with you " When Stahl asked Kidman whether she blames herself for the breakup of her marriage, Kidman replied: "Well of course, there's two people to blame here The couple have two children, Isabella, 9, and Conor, 7 "I would love to meet somebody And it's not, it's certainly not for public scrutiny com/ " Kidman also talks about how her mother helped her through the breakup and why she decided to play the role of author Virginia Woolf in the upcoming film "The Hours " â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
