All ages admitted Some material may not be suitable for children He raises questions but doesn't answer them; he leaves his characters' fates hanging in the air He sees the prejudices and narrow-mindedness, as well as the essential goodness, in everyone Writer-director John Sayles (whose triumphs include "Lone Star" and "Sunshine State") takes an egalitarian look at adopting children in Latin America Lynch has a stunning, heart-rending monologue about how much she'd enjoy spending a snowy day with her daughter That gives them plenty of time to bicker, gossip and absorb the culture â€â€? if they choose Three and a half stars out of four Along the way, he takes the time to get to know all the women â€â€? played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Daryl Hannah, Marcia Gay Harden, Susan Lynch, Mary Steenburgen and Lili Taylor Every actress gets at least one scene to show her chops R â€â€? Restricted That's as close as Sayles comes to taking sides Are they angelic rescuers whose kindness compels them to welcome children with no hope into lives of love and privilege? Or are they committing a selfish act of cultural imperialism by taking babies from a foreign land they don't care to understand? Sayles appreciates both viewpoints but refuses to choose between them Running time: 95 minutes â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences Thanks to Sayles' economical filmmaking and some sharp, no-frills performances, each emerges as a fully thought-out character There's true emotion at every turn Some material may be inappropriate for young children Their fates suggest that whatever their flaws and ulterior motives, the adoptive parents are doing something good for the kids they take home with them NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted At the Movies: 'Casa de los Babys' Sep 19, 8:58 AM EST "Casa de los Babys" tackles big subjects gracefully; it's ambitious and entirely accessible Even though the movie is set in an unnamed country, he creates a fully believable world "Casa de los Babys," an IFC Films release, is rated R for some language and brief drug use PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian Meanwhile, Sayles, who's fluent in Spanish, also tells the stories of the locals: The conflicts of the hotel's owner (Rita Moreno) with her loafing, leftist son; the frustrations of an unemployed man who dreams of escaping to Philadelphia; the poetic sadness of a maid at the hotel (Vanessa Martinez) who gave up her own daughter for adoption; and the seething anger of a pregnant 15-year-old whose mother insists adoption is the only choice And Steenburgen attends an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where it doesn't matter that she doesn't speak the same language as the rest of the participants Frustrated at the slowness of the adoption process, she rants to her lawyer: "At this rate, the baby will be talking in full sentences before I get it! I don't want to have to undo all that!" But Sayles refuses to argue that she's a poor candidate for adoption: He makes the point that plenty of kids think their mothers are crazy and turn out just fine His sympathy, as well as his jaundiced eye, is applied equally to everything he sees PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 Most poignant is the plight of three homeless boys who steal, beg for change and huff spray-paint fumes And that's how "Casa de los Babys" achieves its substantial power If there's a villain, it's Nan (Harden), who condescendingly orders food prepared American-style, steals soap and shampoo from the hotel maids' carts and plans to use corporal punishment to help her child overcome his or her cultural and genetic deficiencies Some of them don't The casa of the slangy Spanglish title is a hotel where six American women wait, sometimes for months, while bureaucrats decide whether to allow them to adopt babies from a nearby orphanage Hannah underplays heroically as she reveals the secret of her reticent, fitness-obsessed character: She's had three full-term pregnancies, but none of the children survived Some hit a ditch It felt like the pressure was off " His father, Mike Nichols, was an Arkansas truck driver who moonlighted as a bass player in a country band When Nichols made his Grand Ole Opry debut in March 2002, his father, only 46, was at the side of the stage Singer Deana Carter sold 5 million copies of her 1996 debut "Did I Shave My Legs for This?" Her 1998 follow-up yielded half a million in sales We'd already proven ourselves with one album, and as long as we keep doing the same thing I think we'll be OK "It just reflects my life at this time more than anything I've heard," he said "It's an emotional moment on the album for me, personally He had left Rogers, Ark Nichols, a tall guy with long dark hair and a hoop earring, cracks a joke about bringing his fan club along and then puts his deep voice to Merle Haggard's "The Farmer's Daughter He had a big influence on his son's musical pursuits and was alive just long enough to see Nichols' star begin to rise " That Opry show was a career marker for Nichols " Good looks aside, the 27-year-old singer is at a pivotal place in his young career The album flopped (Nichols says now he was too green) and he kicked around Nashville playing clubs and working a series of odd jobs, including bartender, cable guy, UPS truck loader and, for one day, door-to-door steak salesman "A lot of people say making the second album after a successful first is pretty scary," he said He visited classic country themes and did it with a rich, irresistible baritone "Of course he was in a wheelchair then, he was pretty sick," Nichols recalls He says he was more confident and relaxed this time around "There are a few more ballads on this one," Nichols said backstage at the Opry " There will always be a place for staunch traditionalists with great chops and a great interpretive style, and Joe is that "We love you Joe," several shout in unison "The sophomore project for any artist is often the determining factor in the public's mind to see if the artist is a one-trick pony or has something more durable and versatile," said Neil Pond, editorial director for Country Music Weekly magazine 2 on the Billboard country chart while the follow-up "Brokenheartsville" went No And in one of the industry's real shockers that year, both Nichols and the album were nominated for Grammys â€â€? pitting him against superstars Jackson, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and the Dixie Chicks "I think it's a little more emotional, maybe a little more spiritual at times " The 11 new songs range from the barroom romp "Don't Ruin It For the Rest of Us" to the dark title track, a Waylon Jennings cover in which a man wakes from a bad dream and vows to God to change his ways His no-frills style drew comparisons to Haggard, Alan Jackson and Randy Travis Nichols doesn't seem worried , for Nashville when he was just 18 The success of his big-label debut "Man With a Memory" made him a torchbearer for country music's neotraditionalists Somehow, the combination clicked Not only was the label and the artist new, so was the producer, Brent Rowan, an ace studio musician who had never produced an album before His follow-up "Revelation," released Tuesday, continues the hard country sound but with a more somber tone â€â€? a reaction, he says, to his father's death from a rare lung disease in 2002 "Joe's a keeper of the flame," said Brian Philips, general manager of Country Music Television " But his thoughts are most apparent in the closing track, Iris DeMent's "No Time to Cry," about a musician who is too busy, or unwilling, to grieve for his dead father " Artists who make a splashy debut face a lot of pressure with the next album He co-wrote one song, the lighthearted "What's a Guy Gotta Do" with its snappy word play, "So I bumped into a pretty girl's shoppin' cart / But all I did was break her eggs and bruise her artichoke hearts The first single, "The Impossible," reached No The schedule is tighter, the expectations higher and the demands greater After 31 record company rejections, he was finally signed in January 2002 by startup label Universal South "In every era we need those and we need new ones Young women, old women, teens, preteens â€â€? they all stream to the front with cameras "Man With a Memory" has sold nearly a million copies He signed a deal with an independent record label and released a self-titled album in 1996 "After I was done we cried together and he told me that was one of his proudest moments 1 In between, Nichols ruminates on misplaced hero worship ("Singer in a Band"), death ("Farewell Party," "No Time to Cry"), failing parental responsibility ("Things Like That") and eroding religious faith ("If Nobody Believed in You") Joe Nichols Takes Darker Turn on New Disc Jul 2, 2:08 PM EST Before Joe Nichols sings a note, women begin rushing the Grand Ole Opry stage "But we thought the exact opposite If Nichols can repeat his success, few will be as surprised this time around |
