Audition self-tape checklist

Casting watches hundreds of tapes. Clarity beats “cinematic” every time—readable face, clean sound, and a performance that starts with intention.

Simple home filming setup suggesting self-tape preparation

Before you record

  • Read all instructions twice (slate, file name, takes, accents).
  • Memorize or be solid enough that eyes aren’t stuck on paper.
  • Rehearse out loud at least three times with a timer.

Lighting & camera

  • Soft key in front; avoid harsh overhead-only light.
  • Camera at eye level; leave a little headroom.
  • Neutral background; no busy patterns behind your face.

Sound

  • Phone lav or external mic if possible; clap once to test levels.
  • Turn off AC, fans, and notifications; close windows if traffic noise.

Performance

  • Start “in the scene”—no long pre-roll dead air.
  • Know your eyeline; don’t chase the reader around the frame.
  • Keep props minimal; safety and speed matter.

Delivery

  • Export in requested format; double-check file name.
  • Watch once on another device before uploading.
  • If notes allow a second take, make it meaningfully different.
